What We're Saying
Joe Wikert of O'Reilly Media says he is giving up on business books. He gives the standard complaint of recently reading a business book and determining about halfway through it that the book was terrible. He thinks the answer is online in blogs and articles. READ FULL DESCRIPTION

Well, on top of the The Countdown Book Club, we've thought of another way we can get some of the books they discuss in their book in your hands. We're starting a new series of special giveaways over on InBubbleWrap. READ FULL DESCRIPTION

We've been talking about how to help people, how to focus on what's positive and helpful in the current state of our world, rather than grumbling over the things that are both out of our control and truly uncertain. One of the ways we can do that is by starting a conversation that starts at a personal level. . READ FULL DESCRIPTION

If the book of the 80's was In Search of Excellence by Peters and Waterman, then book of the 90's was Reengineering the Corporation by Michael Hammer and Jim Champy. We were saddened to hear Michael Hammer died this week at age 60. The best way we can think of to acknowledge his impact is by announcing the inclusion of Reengineering The Corporation in our upcoming book. READ FULL DESCRIPTION
Last week we launched the official countdown to Jack and Todd's book, The 100 Best Business Books of All Time. Our communication has been sporadic on the book project. Kate, our air traffic controller, is imploring us to get with it and start telling you what we have been up to. She's right and there is a lot that has happened. READ FULL DESCRIPTION
Joe Nocera is a columnist for The New York Times who writes about big business, and yesterday my inbox was filled with notes pointing me to his blog. His latest post recommends what he believes are the best business books ever. Here is Nocera's list with his commentary: "Liar's Poker," by Michael Lewis (even though I've since become convinced that the anecdote that gives the book its title never happened). If you are a baseball fan, or even just a fan of great writing, I highly recommend you check out Michael Lewis's recent article for Vanity Fair about sports agent Gus Dominguez, who has been convicted (wrongly, Lewis believes) of smuggling Cuban baseball players to the United States. In it, he follows the story back to Cuba and paints a fascinating portrait of baseball there. Peter Gammons recently stated on Baseball Tonight that the most exciting baseball experience of his life was watching a game in Havana, and you can almost taste that kind of excitement in this piece by Lewis.
