In 1999, Jason Fried was one of the founders of 37signals - then a web design firm, and now a software development company. That transition occurred when the small company found challenges in keeping track of all the project components and information. They developed an in-house software program to help keep things organized, and it worked.

I just posted this question on Twitter and LinkedIn and got a lot of interesting responses. From paper snowflakes, to muffins, to cookies, to photos, to records; these are the things that first came to people's minds when considering the question. These things are what they like to make.
2009 was a challenging year, and the challenges haven't stopped in 2010. In fact, we all are likely working even harder to dig ourselves out of last year, or maintain our solid standing in the current one. With that work, comes stress, and unless we manage that stress properly, our hearts will pay the price.

There's a new article today on Salon titled: Healthcare Reform Rock Star, featuring one of our favorite authors, Atul Gawande. Gawande is a staff writer for the New Yorker and author of The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right, and Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance, books we copiously recommended. And his first book, Complications, garnered rave reviews.

Scott Gerber, columnist for Entrepreneur Magazine, has a book coming out on Wiley this year, titled, Never Get a Real Job, and is now in the process of collecting war stories from entrepreneurs - experiences they've had that were challenging, but helped shape how their businesses formed. Two copies of the Japanese version of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time appeared at our offices on Friday. It's both impressive and fun to look at. We must give kudos to the Japanese publisher, Kodansha, for doing a wonderful job on the book.

We hosted our second annual 800-CEO-READ Business Book Awards event in New York City on Monday night, and want to thank everyone who attended. We'd also like to thank the good folks of The Shoreham Hotel who helped set us up for a great evening, and give a special shout out to the wonderful people of Cave Henricks Communications, without whom we couldn't have pulled it all off. We started the awards three years ago to recognize the authors and publishers of the business-improving, career-guiding, and often life-changing books published in our genre every year.
